RockIt Black is made of plywood collected by the Plywood Protection Project. It’s built from the original plywood used to board up storefronts in New York City during the 2020 Black Lives Matter uprising. The artist has preserved a portion of the wood’s surface to ensure that the work bears the markings of this history and stand as a reminder of where we have been. RockIt Black’s polished mirror ornament on her crown is inspired by Oshun’s mirror and its shape and surface is made to suggest a nestled seed and a womb-like portal to another dimension. The mirrored surface which appears to float over the New York cityscape faces and reflects east to the tree filtered rising sunlight as well as the neighboring Queensbridge Houses. RockIt Black´s online content is meant to enhance the viewers' experience through curated music and content available long after visitors have left the park.
