The installation consists of a large number of ‘‘ryshnik’’ embroidered by three generations of women of the artist’s family. An old symbol of the path in ancient Slavic culture, received from the birth and inherited after the death. This ancient element of the Ukrainian tradition has been preserved in use to this day. The embroidery on these canvases is a kind of language, and a variety of geometric shapes, natural elements, uniting together, represent a certain form of narrative.
Historically, this embroidery was considered a purely female occupation, and knowledge about the features of the technique and the reading of symbols was passed from woman to woman from generation to generation. The artist, as the youngest woman in the family, takes her place in the line, but instead of creating new embroidery in the traditional way, she sews together the towels created by women of past centuries, turning it into a measure of the life path of four generations.
