Iron wire and scheepjes 50% recycled acrylic yarn are used in the creation of the piece New Beginnings.
It reflects several new beginnings.
This piece has made an important mark on my artistic timeline because it's the first knitted sculpture I've created with a knitting machine.
This acts as a starting point for more projects that I've begun working on using my knitting machine.
The artwork was inspired by the bark of a tree that was covered in bumps.
I found the bark of the tree to be extremely fascinating because of it's composed numerous of textures.
I managed to create my own lumps by making the knitted stitches larger in the middle of the work and combining them with the iron wire.
It also has a cocoon-like appearance, hinting to a new beginning.
The sculpture expresses a sense of life and death.
It appears as though a creature crawled out of it and abandoned its shell. But in a way, it also seems like it's continuing in existence.
Because unless you look back on your timeline and are confronted with the remnants in the present, you never know precisely when something new is happening in your life.
