The stables of my hometown of New Delhi, India left a
saddened impact on me as I saw the mistreatment and destitute state of the
horses in the stables. Having visited these stables, I went to other lesser
known stables in India only to discover the same unfortunate state of the
animals.
The horses were typically kept in crowded spaces and often
tied with ropes that severely limited their movement. A number of horses at the
stables suffered from health problems. Commonly found physical problems
included bleeding and infected wounds, diseased hooves, malnourishment and swollen
limbs. Improper tools were used for grooming and basic husbandry procedures
such as dental care and hoof trimming were ignored.
My installation of 'Mistreatment of Horses' depicts the
cruelty with which horses are treated in lesser known stables across India.

I sculpted a wooden horse then used a plaster cast to
produce more horses. The light projection symbolises crowding.
