'Mami fell in the Wata' is based on a Congolesian folk-lore, based on the history of their women which were taken for slaves. A less heard part of the story, was that the women who became too weak from the journey where thrown overboard, alive. To this day, the people of the Congo, and also amongst different communities across Africa, depict a similar image of these women who, once submerged, grew fills and find and became part of a larger mermaid community. Their memory is still honoured by giving offerings to help the passage of their people through life above water. In light of the movement through the media, including 'Black Lives Matter', and now recent representations being made through movies such as 'Black Panther', 'Mami Wata', also has an aesthetic edge of a super-hero, she is empowered and serves to empower minorities.
