The kiosk in
which Kiosk do Cais was inspired, situated in Praça do Comércio, no longer
exists. The reasons for its disappearance
are unknown, but it might have been one of two: its deterioration beyond any
possible recovery; or the redesigning of the streets' layout that caused its
destruction.
Praça do Comércio Kiosk had a wood base with octagonal section, a wood
counter, a wood body and windows on all sides. The dome was octagonal with
buds, typically oriental, with different colors and carved edges. It had a
semi-circular canvas. It was a private kiosk, with high atendance. From the
images captured at the time there seemed to have existed another similar one at
the opposite northwest corner of the Square.
This paper miniature was designed in four main materials - mostly paper,
plastic fiber (printed in a 3D printer) and acrylic paint for the corbels and
the signboard and lace for the tracery of the umbrella. Its structure is almost
identical to the real Kiosk, but its decoration differs a little. The dome is
removable and the kiosk may function as a lamp with string lights on the inside. A “Kiosk do Cais” is hand-made in its majority and takes one week to create.
