Inaugurated in 1925 by newspaper “Diário de Notícias”, Tivoli Kiosk is
located on the sidewalk opposite Tivoli Movie Theatre in Av. da Liberdade, in
Lisbon and sells newspapers, magazines, cigarettes and several games such as
the lottery, euromillions and others.
The real Kiosk, in which this paper miniature was inspired, is composed
of a square base with decorations, a counter that circles the structure and a
body with windows covered by sliding sideboards, surmounted by glazed
semicircles. The dome, also square, is composed of buds and ends in a small
pinnacle decorated with spherical lightbulbs. Two of its most distinctive
elements are the umbrella that has elaborate rims cut upwards and the short
canvas all around. Tivoli Kiosk has been decorated with different colors over
the years, such as red and white or yellow and red.
The paper miniature “Kiosk da Tita” was designed in three main materials
- mostly paper, plastic fiber (printed in 3D) for the corbels and the
signboard, fabric for the canvas and acrylic and fabric paint on the signboard,
corbels and canvas. Its structure is almost identical to the real Kiosk, but
its decoration differs a little. The drawing of the sidewalk is similar to the
real one where Tivoli Kiosk is located and was drawn in coal pencil. The dome
is removable and the kiosk may function as a lamp with string lights on the inside. A “Kiosk da Tita” is hand-made in its majority and takes one week
to create.
