I was born and raised in a small town near Turin, at a time when a deep economic crisis had scattered the territory with abandoned industrial buildings, as evidence of the failure of an economic system that sets aside what it considers old, in an endless race towards what’s “newer”.
Unlike the current and more common trend trying to give new life to abandoned places through gentrification, claiming as redevelopment operations what in fact are merely speculations that strip those spaces from their identity and loosen their bond with the territory holding them, I decided to analyze their “poiesis”, investigate their beauty and draw inspiration to start a dialogue with them.
Abandoned places hide the destiny awaiting all things: time passes relentlessly and erases the past giving life to an uncertain present. Based on these suggestions and wandering around those spaces I gather the materials, and when I’m back in my studio I use them to build devices that refer aesthetically both to the place that inspired them and to the sensations I experienced.
Afterwards I bring back the objects in the context that inspired them, and with smoke bombs that I light inside them I release through pipes and chimneys colored fumes which, when dispersed, take possession of the surrounding space and return flashes of life in a visual, auditory and olfactory way.
This final moment is filmed in order to have a record of the dialogue that took place; the resulting video is repeated in a loop alongside the works and explains the layered marks on the objects.
Abandoned places are invisible to our eyes, detached from the context in which they exist, they seem surrounded by a bubble in which time and reality flow with different rhythms from the outside world. This work tries to be a point of contact between two realities that rarely meet: the places used today and the ones that have been abandoned. They expose a hectic and superficial life with no consideration for a possible future.
