The piece “Portal” is a contradiction, a fusion of two opposites - the styrofoam, a material that could survive hundreds of years, and linen paper, so fragile it would disintegrate in a glass of water.
My concept for this piece is to shine a light on this commonly used (and discarded) packaging material, at the same time reflecting on my own role (as the consumer) in its existence. The title “Portal” is inspired by the design of the styrofoam, the keyhole shape a metaphor for a doorway - perhaps into a better world, where humans are more mindful of the impact that our consumption has on the environment. The symbolism of the paper covering the styrofoam in a lasting embrace draws parallels with the need to embrace better practices for a sustainable future.
“Portal” was selected for Biennale Chianciano 2022 in Tuscany, Italy and won the International Art Critics prize
