Homeland is part of the Cambodia series, which uses maps forms to emphasize regions
where there are severe threats to bird populations. Cambodia is the last remaining habitat of the regal and nearly extinct
Bengal Florican (the last count recorded only 400 mature birds). The Bengal
Florican and other endangered birds are victims of habitat fragmentation. By
using recycled plastic bags screen printed with images of endangered birds and
overprinted with text in endangered languages, I hope to layer additional
information into the piece. The text is
written in various endangered indigenous languages such as Yiddish, Shorthand, Tsotzil,
Zoque and excerpts of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring translated into Spanish.
