Grain of Rice 1 / 6, 2021 /2022
The heavily enlarged rice grain first reveals the beauty and precision of its shape as it is unpeeled, not polished. The white of porcelain – white like polished rice – then contrasts with colors of the underlying glasses. According to the light, porcelain delicately absorbs the colors of the glasses and in turn projects colored shadows. Light plays an important role in my work. Light is a kind of bridge between the artistic product in porcelain and the natural product that is the rice, from which a rice plant can develop under the effect of light, with countless new grains of rice. During this natural process of creation, it goes through different stages of color, from the light green of the germ to the brown of the ripe grain. The greatness of nature lies last but and not least in its potential for growth and transformation.
This theme includes light, the elements water, earth, fire, air as well as seasons in their change of tone and the cycles of nature. (Water plays a role as important as light in the plant growth process. All two are colorless, but take colors by reflection as well as in their transformation into plant form). In my work, I would like to make everything resonate this spectrum. The tiny grain of rice is finally integrated into a something much greater: this is the greatness of Nature.
