The main character of this still life is a tuna, sectioned in thick slices and displayed in the middle of a composition on top of a table.
References to seventeenth-century still lifes are counteracted by the tuna slices: shoved in tin cans to fill-up our classy salads.
Outside the window, a raging sea roars and calls its products to itself.
The glimmering halo surrounding the sacrificial victim stacks up against the dull, sombre colours of the character: deprived of life and with its flesh resigned. On the other hand, all the elements of the arrangement, including the small tin box, are girdled by a royal and purple tone of red, capturing in one shot both the last tuna, and our true nature.
The tuna is the symbolical image of a nature at the mercy of the human race, and the loss of a healthy relationship with nature, « degraded to a reservoir of inert matter and a garbage can (Latouche, 1995) ».
The frame of this still life reminds us of the fictional preciousness of ancient artistic works. It aims to historicize the composition, giving to the character this antique feeling: a tormented image of a fish henceforth gone extinct.

Una natura morta dove protagonista è un tonno sezionato in grossi tranci, al centro di una composizione disposta sopra un tavolo.
Il richiamo alle nature morte seicentesche è contraddetto dal taglio in trance del tonno: ridotto in scatola, per poi finire nelle nostre insalate ricche.
Fuori dalla finestra un mare in tempesta che richiama a sé i suoi prodotti.
Allo scintillio dell’aura attorno alla vittima sacrificale, si contrappongono i colori spenti e bruni del soggetto: privo di vita e dalle carni rassegnate. Tutti gli elementi della composizione, compresa la scatoletta, sono invece incorniciati da un rosso regale e purpureo, e costituiscono un’istantanea di un ultimo tonno, e di ciò che siamo.
Il tonno è l’immagine emblematica di una natura alla mercé della razza umana, e della perdita di un sano rapporto con la natura, «ridotta a un serbatoio di materia inerte e a una pattumiera (Latouche, 1995)».
E anche la cornice di questa natura morta - richiamo alla preziosità finzionale delle opere del passato -, vuole storicizzare la composizione, per fare apparire il soggetto antico: immagine straziata di un pesce ormai estinto.
