Geometry of Homeland
Installation, object, performative/ephemeral action
conducted in pre-existing spaces / out of galleries,
2017/2018
This piece is performed in a pre-existing space, I use
strings coloured with colours of the national flag (or
flags, it the piece is conducted in other countries). It is
always white and red – related to colours of the national
flag of Poland (and for example a different one.)
During exhibition-action, two pieces are created: one
that I conduct by myself, and other that is “weaved” by
visitors. No shape is suggested, I do not strive to complete
a particular drawing. Geometry of Homeland is
created at the moment (after completion, the result is
documented and destroyed). The object itself is built of
conversations and joint reflections of participants who
try to define what national colours are and mean for
them, what a particular colour says to them, why they
begin with it, why they choose it, whether they “converse”
with each other (and why), but they also define
how these colours and tensions between strings and
stalls tell their and our own story about homeland.
Each time my Geometry of Homeland is conducted in
Polish (or other) cities, it is always supported by a deep
reflection on what is Poland in and outside of itself, how
my thinking of Poland differs in its eastern boundaries
and when I’m in the North. How often white and red are
able to “run” concurrently, and how often they intersect
or don’t connect at all. All strings are fixed with nails
to the surface, this “pinning down”, hammering and
tangling also establish a vital part of my narration on
homeland. Geometry of Homeland is time for my story
about Poland.
