In the Force Field Series, the use of woods displays two artistic expressions: the wood-carved figures and the technique of mortise and tenon joints. I borrowed the structure found in real life, mortise and tenon joints, to refer to the environment, arranged objects in a space based on its spatial features and other cultural factors, and presented my work accordingly. Through this artistic approach, the figures I created are independent and interdependent. Through mortise and tenon joints, objects and the environment they stay in are linked together with invisible force. For me, every part of this sculpture can be seen as pieces of message, demonstrating how we perceive and interact with people and the environment in real life. As such, I intend to leave it to viewers to experience and interpret such messages on their own.
In Force Field—Dovetail Joints Feat. Stress Balls, I want to explore the internal status of an aggregate object when its element objects are brought together and set apart. Here, mortise and tenon joints are turned into tracks, allowing the four figures to share the same body while the inner space of their body is filled with stress balls as if there is one more invisible figure attached to them. This aggregate object speaks of two opposite forms of pressure – tension and relaxation – which I borrowed to portray humans and the environment in my work.
