Figures
A
series of sculpted figures portraying people struggling to survive in the
world. Most seem to be groaning under the burden of life; they’re stooped and
look tormented. Many of the figures have lost limbs through the blows of fate.
How many illnesses? Abuses? Wars? Most
of them represent transparent people. Some of them are trying to stand
erect against the gusts of life. Some represent people who suffer due to their
appearance or the color of their skin.
What
color is most “worthwhile” to be born within our world? Black? White? Is it
best to adopt the white man’s way of life despite the body’s dark color? To
have a white mind? Or perhaps the white man has a longing to darken his skin
with an infinite tan, and at tanning salons. The figures are made of tiny
pieces of Styrofoam – sort of shavings, with which I slowly put together and
build the figures. The small parts create “thorny” figures as if their entire
internal surface is jagged, angular, very expressive. The figures are sort of
archetypes and have no signs of an individual. They represent suffering,
rejection, exclusion as such. The choice of white and black is, first and
foremost, the choice of the Styrofoam material, which is usually white. But I’m
looking for the color black, and use it to express black-white human figures.
