FENCE focuses on the contradictions of borders, creating the illusion of protection on the one hand, but isolating and excluding people on the other hand.
This artwork is part of the textile collection Donezk.
The discourse on cultural transfer is the central theme of the project. The starting point for the design was an interview with the artist Illya Gros, born in Donezk in Donbass, Eastern Ukraine. In a dialogue about personal experiences and memories, we delved into his past. Especially the question of home and the own identity were crucial. What constitutes home? Is it a place, a person, a smell, a dish, a memory or a feeling? Based on my impressions, I developed a pattern language, which I created using a variety of textile techniques. Different types of bindings in the woven fabrics are used to create structures and a world of colour that reflect the emotions of the experience. Screen printing, weaving, dyeing and painting were media in my process to find answers.
