External Observer is an installation commissioned by the Art Station Dubulti in Latvia to be on display for one month at a train station. When the visitors look through the viewing hole, they can see
themselves being recorded on screens by hidden security cameras. This is a reference to the idea of the city as a repressive and controlling system. In a similar way to Jeremy Bentham’s ‘Panopticon’, the urban environment uses the element of surveillance as a tool in structuring and forming its functions.
