Chalices is a collection of three small mixed media sculptures. The rigidity, fragility and transparency of (red) glass is contrasted with the softness of (white) fabric and its capacity to protect, hide, or oppress what it covers. The piece explores the tension between exposing and hiding, particularly within an oppressive political system with censorship and torture. The piece is inspired in a song with the same name by the poet, song writer and singer Chico Buarque during the Brazil's military dictatorship in the 1970s. With the same pronounciation in Portuguese, Calice means 'goblet', while Cale-se means be silent!
