Broken is a floor installation
made from shattered ceramic plates, mixed with building rubble. The plates are
hand-painted with drawings of endangered birds and produced by a family owned
ceramic factory in nearby Tlaquepaque. In this piece I have challenged myself
to continue deepening the themes of my work using another medium, in this case
ceramics and through the form of a floor installation.
Throughout history, shards of glass, textiles and ceramics
provide the visual data that archeologists decode in order to tell the stories
of lost civilizations. By piling the broken ceramics with rubble, I am hoping viewers
make the connection that soon our beautiful birds may also be lost to us unless
we take action now to save their habitats.
