Big Mama Breasts is a piece created within the scope of
anthropomorphic textile sculpture, through the mastery of the technique of
continuous crochet modulation, as if sculpting the shape and volume, through
thousands of stitches. This is a technique that I have been perfecting,
distinguishing itself from other textile sculptures that use the coupling of
modules.
In this process I sculpted the human body, namely as female
breasts, with some experiences in relation to genitals (female and male)
and other parts of the body connected to the senses, such as mouths, ears, or
even vital internal organs such as the ovaries or the heart.
Recently, in connection with an exhibition of ancient Greek
sculpture, Professor Ian Jenkins, Senior Curator of the British Museum and
curator of that exhibition, explained that ancient Greek culture is associated
with nudity, as there is a difference between being nude and nudity. “Being
naked, for the Greeks, is something accidental, it's like being unintentionally
unclothed, or it's an indecent practice associated with nobility. But nudity is
an intentional act, it's like a uniform you put on when you take off your
clothes. Nudity is the uniform of the righteous,” said Jenkins.
We live in times where modesty, shamelessness and modernity
are confused as concepts in society. Social networks such as Instagram and
Facebook continue to ban photographs of female nipples, in a censorship of the
woman's body, due to the immediate negative connotation, even if it does not
have the slightest sexual connotation. In other words, we live cultural
conventions arising from a society that coexists at the same time with free and
mass consumption of sex on the Internet and with feelings of shame towards the
woman's body, attributing to nudity a character of sexual suggestion in an
algorithmic and prejudiced way .
I believe in the concept of nudity as an intentional act, or
that "uniform" that one wears when taking off an outfit. And it was
in this apparent antithesis that I was inspired to make the continuous
modulation, looking for a hyper-realistic anthropomorphic representation of the
human body and its nudity in crochet. It was between the nobility of the
woman's body and nudity and the blind and prejudiced censorship that the series
of textile sculpture pieces was born, many centered on the woman's breasts. Big
and small breasts, white and black, of women, of mothers - in the nobility of
their role and without prejudiced censorship, exposed by their shape and
dressed by the thread that usually makes up the clothes that cover them.
