Each bean is handled by the artist several times during its creation, including shaping, adding patina (colour), beeswax, and final buffing.

Back in the 1990s, I had a studio in Moray Place. Olivier started a little espresso bar/roastery, called Mazagran, across the road, and I became a regular there. He asked me to make some solid bronze coffee beans for door handles, which I did, but they turned out way too heavy to be door handles. Never mind, he still liked them luckily, and when he sold the cafe to a friend of mine, Simon, and his business partner, Chris, he gave them each one of these Big Beans. A year or so later (about 2000), I was working at Mazagran, initially as a cleaner, and later as a coffee roaster. Simon asked me to make a small version that Mazagran could gift to cafes they were supplying with coffee. I made about 25 for them, and I've been making the Baby Beans ever since.
