These artifacts exist as my memory - faulty and incomplete. They were made using
a familiar object its existence now rendered incorrect and unrecognizable. Like
historical artifacts, we apply meaning to them which may or may not be based on
known facts. When previously-unknown historical artifacts are discovered to be
new to science we must theorize as to their origin and purpose. With this
installation, each and every artifact was made by casting in, on, or by marking
making with that object, one as familiar as my own hand. Like those new
historical artifacts, the viewer becomes witness to their existence, and asked
to discover their purpose. In an attempt to disambiguate & obfuscate a this
very familiar object, impressions were made as direct castings using the object
as the mold. It did not survive this process and this negation of the original
object is an important part of this work.
These artifacts exist as the only evidence of it. In this way I foresee
all works by my hand becoming. They too will someday only exist as a memory of
me, faulty and incomplete. It will be up to others to theorize what it is all
about.
