Arms Length: Physical proximity is a given within modern societies: we overwhelmingly live our lives near others, dependent on physical and emotional exchanges. I wanted to look at the new idea of social cohesion relying on a counter-intuitive distancing: the notion that many separated points of support are needed to carry the weight of the whole.
I chose materials which reflect our links to both history and a precarious future: fragile porcelain parts of childhood toys supporting the uncompromising weight of a steel sphere. Only the multiple points of separated contact balance the piece between cohesion and collapse.
