18” is inspired by Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians.
Minimal, repetitive, rhythmic, mesmerising, immersive, contemplative - all words that describe both our own and Reich’s music.
This large scale floor piece is a sculptural response to this music. Multiple units of a single twisted folded form, have its height and aperture augmented/reduced so creating a different but subtle surface pattern that undulates and echos the music. It pays homage to Reich’s intricate addition and subtraction of notes and reflects the hypnotic nature of the work whilst the gold paper echos the shimmering quality of the music.
This piece is 2.6x2.6m, with a total of 342 individual units of folded Fedrigoni paper, it can be reconfigured to suit different spaces.
We chose a single form as a building unit with 8 folds - a beautiful twist emerges from it. We machine score to create varying apertures and heights for the units before hand folding them.
Fedrigoni’s gold paper which are a dream to work with, environmentally friendly, works in harmony and provides the gradual subtle changes of the units, gives off a wonderful glow and change of colour due to the angles change thus creating the optical movement effect.
