As soon as a camera points at you, the photographer rules out the rest of the people. Once the photographer presses the shutter, they rule out the rest of the day. When they choose the angle and decide what to include in the frame, they have already transmitted their way of seeing. While freezing an exact moment in time, the photographer suggests it is something special, worth keeping, and deserving of repeated views.
Is photography a limited mirror of the world?
WITNESS is a project about observing human behavior and questioning truth through the lens of photography. By moving the medium of photography away from aestheticization into something observational, the experience of everyday life is captured entirely untouched by the creator’s perspective. The photographs explore the dozens of moods and rhythms coexisting within social spaces, capturing public interaction, leisure, and daily routines in the city (London, UK) and at the beach (Cala Santanyi, Mallorca).
Specific parameters drive the photographic process to disempower the creator, which leads to the highest form of objectivity. Nothing is intentionally composed, photographs are not altered, and images are taken every 30 seconds without looking through the viewfinder.
WITNESS offers a gaze at the flux of life by capturing reality in a way that differs from conventional photojournalism and documentary.
