Inferno, Canto V (37-45) - Dante Alighieri
Intesi ch’a così fatto tormento
enno dannati i peccator carnali,
che la ragion sommettono al talento.
E come li stornei ne portan l’ali
nel freddo tempo, a schiera larga e piena,
così quel fiato li spiriti mali
di qua, di là, di giù, di sù li mena;
nulla speranza li conforta mai,
non che di posa, ma di minor pena.
I understood that to such torment
the carnal sinners are condemned,
they who make reason subject to desire.
As, in cold weather, the wings of starlings
bear them up in wide, dense flocks,
so does that blast propel the wicked spirits.
Here and there, down and up, it drives them.
Never are they comforted by hope
of rest or even lesser punishment.

I visit the posthumous retrospective ‘Robert Rauschenberg’ at Tate Modern, London.
Rauschenberg's
work, his combinations of found objects & found footage
– leading
to a new iconography –
inspires me to explore new territory in my own
photography.
I call it: Veridica.
Modern techniques make it easy to blend images in much the same way
that slides were superimposed previously.
Rauschenberg's physical transfer process has become the abstract processing of digits.
Drawing on my collection of film and digital photos, I start combining.
There is no end to it, it is limitless; it may become dangerous.

Over time several themes emerged in the Veridica series:

My final goal is to illustrate La Divina Commedia Inferno by Dante Alighieri in this Veridica-style.
The photograph shown here is one of the first studies for this project.
