Gondolas in winter, on background Ca' Loredan and Ca' Farsetti (Ca' is short of Casa: Home).
You can see the original hidden Byzantine nature, of these two palaces which obviously have undergone additions over the centuries.
The scheme was this: the first floor was entirely open (Venice had never been invaded, hence a certain freedom in the forms), while the upper floor consisted of the continuation of two lateral turrets, the torresele.
The ground floor had a large functional portico for unloading goods, because, let us remember, first of all, Venice was a commercial empire and the patricians/merchants were not at all ashamed to show their skills in trade.
