These
deep etched images of what remains from a penguin sits as a poignant reminder
of the impact of contemporary consumerism on the unsuspecting wildlife that shares
this biosphere.
This
is plastic at its most destructive.
In
viewing this plastic, this net, the viewer is struck by the colour and its
resemblance to the icy waters of our artic regions. A net, a large net, it may
have had a fish trapped in it, thus enticing this penguin to eat it. A final
meal, and what a final meal! This net was so large that it filled the gullet of
its host. Pressured into all its cavities, impressions of not only the throat
and anus of the penguin is visible in its shape, but also the negative space
left by its organs (heart, etc.) are visible.
It
is, in my mind, horrific, just one piece of plastic did this. What of the other
billion floating in our ocean’s. This truly creates a bleak picture of this
planet’s future.
