The current ongoing series of photographic works, 'the fall_strangejourney’, from which 'the fall_strangejourney #57' is a part, alludes to both the law of gravity and the body in free-fall within atmospheric and material envelopment, in the middle of a movement, isolated in a balancing act, or already fallen. Central to this work is the concept of documentary uncertainty, focusing on unstable space—geographic and cinematic, mythic and mnemonic.
The series of works, each enacted at 10 second intervals, focus on how experiences are expressed through the human body or how bodily experiences can be shaped. The new works deal mainly with the concept of atmospherics, forces of unpredictability and the movement of bodies–a navigational failure of intention. Taking the conceptual and ongoing underpinnings from previous large-scale project, BEYOND THIS POINT, where 14 balloon flights were taken which traced the historic flight of Italian aeronaut, Vincenzo Lunardi, b. 1754, this current project and series takes the materiality of flight and the allure of atmospheric envelopment through to inclusion of subject and body.
The fall, which both symbolically and literally, causes us to lose our footing is also associated with loss or decay, is here, within this series, interpreted through a sublime descent. Physical expressions such as being out of balance and losing stability serve here as metaphors for psychological or emotional states.
The exposed vulnerability becomes an expression of a beautiful failure, something that is consolidated in a culture where lightness, mobility and stability are desired. With the titles of 'the fall_strangejourney #57’, the extremities of a figure, visible or covered can be regarded as an unstable body in addition to symbolic journeys through the instability of the social and political. The bodily subject of the fall and turn perhaps creates a dystopic strangeness.
Where weight and the fall may be perceived as negative forces that preferably should be counteracted, the artistic intent is, at the same time, inevitable of a progressive fall or struggle to gain the upright.
