The series, entitled What Came Over the Waters, began as an offering to the deity of the seas, Yemaya, the Yoruban orisha known by many names and worshipped throughout the Afro-Caribbean world. This series was made in collaboration with In Rapture, a collective composed of myself and my sister, an art historian, who is also the subject in the image. As Jamaicans, the ocean is the sole site which unites our ancestral histories, which were brought together by the sugar and the slave trade.
