Nightscapes
The Nightscapes photographic series is based on the holiness of places both architectonics or naturals. They represent a connection with the human being and its most ancestral history. Light wrap these monuments or natural elements to help the observer to look at these places with a new visual perception.
Light becomes part of the monument or the landscape, it's part of the photograph itself even if it hasn't a specific shape, but it highlights the sacredness of that place. In this case, light is a path to connect the reality to some other place, connect the real world with an otherworldly.
This project started five years ago and has the aim to visit the most historic and sacred sites in the world, from the ancient olive trees in Apulia to the Greek temples in Sicily in the Mediterranean area, to the Celtic areas in the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland and so on in every part of Europe.
Photographic process and technical info:
The pictures are taken by night, always during the full moon to have this soft brightness on the landscape. They are photographed with long exposures, from 30 sec. to some minutes, and the light painting is made with handmade lights. The torches are moved by hand, with a long pole or with a drone and not created with digital post-production.
The prints are on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching fine art paper, for the black and white pictures, and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta for the colour. Both are pasted on aluminium sheets and then framed with anti-reflective glass.
