Memento mori, remember that you have to die, is a Latin saying that stresses the impermanence of all things, and reminds that all things, including us, must die. As the story goes, a slave had the task of saying that to the ear of a general having a triumph, in order to remind him that he too had to die, and his glory was ephemeral and would be forgotten.
As such, a memento mori is one of the important themes in art, exemplified by still life painting. I follow this theme, but my still lifes are flowers that are past death. What I try to show is that there is beauty in decay and death. I have a pictorialist approach in my images, because I want to emphasize their metaphoric value.
