A major influence and personal obsession, the paintings by Otto Dix have been a vital inspiration in Ansett;s development as an artist and especially those of his daughter ‘Nelly mit Spielzeug’ and ‘Nelly mit Blumen’ displayed in London in 1992 inspired Ansett to re-create the two paintings as tribute. It took 6 years but in 1998 he came across a little girl sitting alone on the steps outside a pizza restaurant whose personality immediately resonated with the essence of the original works.
The girl called Marie Louise had serious medical issues from birth and due to treatment for a brain tumor had been in and out of hospitals her entire life. Due to some of the aggressive treatment, this was the first time she had been able to grow her hair.
Ansett worked closely with the parents and Marie-Louise to create these images. Marie-louyise has since gone on to study drama at university and still has the images with her in her digs.
