And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. – Exodus 25
I performed this portable tent on a desolate shore along the Great
Salt Lake. The wearable tent is made from sewn together old domestic
cloth that is held up by poles of olive wood. The text embroidered on my
long linen dress is from Exodus and is about creating the tabernacle.
My intention was to reference the divine but also the human idea of
sanctuary for oneself and others. In particular, I was thinking of the
current situation in the United States of America and globally toward
immigrants and refugees seeking sanctuary. I have created and perform
the piece as a directive to create sanctuary for all of us.
