Long Journey, 2020-
Ali Georgescu
This work consists of a series of videos and photographs that invite the viewer into immersive spaces where they can meditate on the idea of consciousness as an ever-changing world separate from themselves. The scenes, vaguely situated underground or underwater, depict unclear matter in ambiguous states of arrangement or entropy; a sort of timeless limbo where consciousness floats aimlessly between moments of existence and nonexistence, and where visual and auditory information fluctuates between clarity and obscurity.
Long Journey is a project driven by a desire to create and bring to life imagined spaces through which the idea of the unconscious can be explored and articulated in a visualized inner world. This world is created as a means to understand the way memory, information, and trauma move through and change the landscape of the psyche over time. Sound has a special role as the primary tool I use to guide viewers’ experiences of the work and drive forward the feeling of internality in the spaces I construct. The ebb and flow of intensity throughout the videos and the series as a whole mimics the ‘in-flux’ quality of conscious thought and narrative, and the disjointed nature of the human mind in general as it tries to interpret creations that bubble up from the subconscious.
This work represents a desire for the conscious mind to be able to visualize the world of the unconscious, something that can never truly be seen or understood. How does one actually create artwork that explores the unconscious in a way that can be experienced universally? It is from that question that the work emerges from; an existential journey as an end in itself.
