A gesture of peace, the hands are illuminated by a pattern from Iznik, one of the oldest Ottoman cities known for tile-making. The work is simultaneously secular and spiritual. Depicting people has long been taboo in Muslim culture. Ornamental geometry and fractal art have partially developed as a result of this ban. In breaking this rule, by using the very product it has created, I aim to start new conversations on what we allow ourselves to be, on the permissibility of being human.
