Due to complications from eye surgery and the effects of old age, the artist’s father completely lost his vision. As he cared for him, he’d often ask him to explain what he could see in order to keep track of his deteriorating condition. These interactions sparked remembrances, memories, and anecdotes of growing pains and love lost. This piece is an interpretation of one of those stories.
Afflicted by vulnerability and issues of self-worth, his father deeply lamented the loss of a woman he was unable to hold on to. His self-assurance—or lack thereof—shaped his relationships and the love he both offered and let slip away.
This piece represents the whispered words and fleeting touches that now remain paused, reflecting the ache of what was, is, and could have been. By looking through his father’s eyes —a sight twice removed— the artist creates an echo of perception: a window seen through another window, allowing us to witness the intimacy of the moment while simultaneously being unable to narrow any distance in time and space. Although the image is not perfectly clear, it evokes an atmosphere of longing and nostalgia: an aura we can experience and connect to in spite of its abstract representation.
Her family didn’t want us together
I ran through warm breezes of guilt
Her kiss tasted like ice cream after Sunday service
