'Living creatures cannot but sense every second. Our consciousness is, after all, based on the action of sensory activity. Sensory information received through the sensory organs is transmitted to neural circuits to see and hear the world, to smells and taste, and to create numerous thoughts and emotions. The world we see every moment is nothing more than a combination of sensory information that our bodies' five senses diligently ask.'
I’m intrigued by the way how we perceive the world around us through the senses based on therapeutic, meditative, neuro-scientific, cognitive-psychological research. But not limited to myself, I’d like to approach this project to be more socially relatable. I believe artists are empowered to consider and reveal social issues to the public even though it just brings awareness not offering a feasible solution. Today, in this hectic era we face varying levels of anxiety and depression in our daily lives. Many elements surrounding us have a detrimental impact on people’s mental health.
According to Meehan Crist, ‘As people become more and more concerned with the psychological ramification of the overwhelming digital world, we may finally be ready to explore /the real benefits of taking-a-vacation from the senses.’
As a person who has hyperthyroidism, I am easily be pushed into sensory overload. To counter stress and my vulnerability as a whole, this artistic research project aims to align the mind and body back into balance by reducing sensory stimuli while experiencing and expanding awareness of the self, ultimately decode how the body, brain and mind get into a state of relaxation with sensory isolation under experimental methods of REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy).
