Inside the barrel are the strings, which are tuned by large tuning pegs on the outside of the barrel. Unusual form the “instrument” makes it possible to experiment with it – change it’s position, one may play it with fingers, sticks, a bow, or it can even be used as a percussion instrument.
Maximum analog, huge and quite complicated to operate musical instrument. The music coming out of this barrel is ephemeral — the walls change the form, musical tuning is flowing, one string tension changes the sound of the whole barrel, touching one string one can create vibrations, flowing sound. Nevertheless all the “defects” make it possible to depart from dictatorship of the accuracy, melody and imposed “music keys”.
At my first performance, I invited the audience to come up and try to play the barrel, and also to touch or even hug the barrel to feel the vibrations of the sound.
In the era of active and total miniaturization and digitalization, this instrument reminds us that sound it’s about vibration, about volume, capacity, space, it is something that can be felt at the physical level.
