The work mixes with me or the layers that make me up as a
person. So, as the work has developed, I have better understood what has come
to light. I am a great grandson of slaves, native Indians and Europeans
(Italians and Portuguese). In the four branches the presence of the
Afro-descendant Religious Tradition was important and still is today, although
I was educated in a religion of French origin, more closely in tune with this
African Tradition: Spiritism (Allan Kardec).
Spiritism is an update of the legacy of Christ, who never
denied the possibility of life after death, as well as the possibility of
reincarnation or the possibility of this spirit reincarnating as many times as
necessary for its improvement.
The Brazilian Afro-descendant tradition, in addition to
following these precepts, is syncretic with Catholicism, in particular Umbanda
and Candomblé (I emphasize that there are other segments such as Quimbanda,
Encantaria, for example). These last two are not Christian, but they are not
anti-Christian and have their pillars of support in the Orixás. It is these
Orixás, their particular and harmonious universes that constitute the
iconographic essence of this series of works, presented here. It is this
iconography (weapons, natural elements, colors) that has given soul to this
series of works.
