The nature and meaning of gender is fascinating. How do we recognize what gender we are ? The example of transgender children who develop to reject the binary, sex-based gender role into which they are placed by their parents suggests that we carry intrinsic mental templates of preferences which come into conflict with the assigned (socially constructed) gender. If there really are such templates what do they specify ? Subjectively, for me, these 3 images represent 3 different ways of being a woman. Are these different ways represent different female-adjacent genders ? Or do these variations just arise from the interactions of gender with different structures of personality more generally ?
