Such storefronts were (and still are) a common sight in my hometown in Malaysia, but in contrast seem almost extinct in a developed country like Singapore, my current home.
In the process of creating this piece, I could almost smell the familiar, lingering scent of metal, grease and rust that would greet anyone who passed by. This artwork represents my wish to preserve a cherished part of my childhood memories — to never forget the essence of the simplest way of life, led by the kindest, most hardworking people I knew.
I hope to capture and portray the feelings I had from my personal experiences for future generations, to remember and appreciate the simplicities in life.
