In this piece, I am interested in themes of lineage, cultural memory, and understandings of self. Two young girls stand in front of a portrait of two even younger girls, these girls happen to be their respective mothers. In this piece I am similarly interested in the ways in which ones surroundings can reflect culture, status and self. The intricacies of the surrounding objects are of just as much importance as the figures in the foreground. The ornate decoration assumes a love for "finer things," however the lack of space demonstrates a sense of normalcy when it comes to status. The usage of the frame also is meant to create a direct reference to curation, and signifies to the viewer that although this is set in a familiar, home setting, this is a curated space. This reference to curated spaces raises questions of who has historically had access to institutional art spaces and what it means to create our own space.
