In the beginning, I just painted my dreams or memories in the pictures, most of which were my frustrating process of studying and painting. Later, I gradually remembered the things which happened a long time ago, that was when I was a child or something I had seen but didn't pay attention to.
⋯⋯
There was a small factory in my cousin's grandfather's house. They specialised in making plastic flowers. This was a scene of that factory. The red door led to the atrium of their house. The blue part was the staircase, and the yellow part was another staircase, which led to the second floor. The factory is on the ground floor, but the stairs led to the second floor. The second floor was built many years later, there was no staircase to go up, so a simple staircase was built from the factory to go up to the second floor.
When I was a child, I used to stay at my paternal grandfather’s house or my cousin’s grandfather’s house. Sometimes I would go to my maternal grandfather’s house. Because he lived in another city, I sometimes went to his house. All of their houses are 40-50 years old. The spaces of these old houses are very special. Usually, when I stand in one place, I can see many changes in the spaces. I wonder if it is because the old house has to meet the needs of different periods, some fine-tuning has been made. It is not to change the structure of the house complicatedly, but simple additions and deletions. Because it was not very complete, it left some traces that made me feel very strange.
I didn't think it was weird before, but when I planned to make a "Space" series, I began to realise their weirdness, but they were also very interesting. This is an earlier picture of the "Space" series, so I spent a lot of time thinking about its colour scheme.
In addition to the "Space" series, I also discussed the topic of colour science with my instructor at that time and studied the power and impact of colour. At first, I felt that the three primary colours, red, yellow and blue, were the strongest and could produce a sense of space. Later, other ideas came up. However, this picture was completed in the earlier period of the "Space" series, so the three primary colours were used.
For the composition of this picture, if I fill the entire colour block with red, yellow and blue, it may not create a sense of space. It may be because the original composition is too flat, so I only colour the door frame red, which makes people know that there is another space inside; the blue part leaves a border, like a handrail; the yellow part is completely painted.
The whole wall is painted black because the factory was very dark, which always made me feel that everything was black. The small window showed the other part of my cousin's grandfather's house, but it was an upside-down space. This idea was added later to allow more changes and imagination in the space of this picture.
