The painting shows a view of the evening city from the window. Far away on the horizon there are flashes of fireworks, the echoes of a someone else's celebration. In the foreground there are binoculars and an apple core on the window sill, things left here by a man from whose apartment we look out of the window. This is the sill of an outside observer who does not feel to be the part of that holiday and who does not escape from the daily routine. This man has a desire to get closer to the celebration but not to be its part or its organizer. Moreover, the spectator is unwilling to change the pace of their life but only wants to watch the holiday.
