S.S. American Star
Acrylic on wood and plaster.
In January 1994 while being towed by a Ukrainian tug towards Thailand, where the SS American Star was to be transformed into a luxury floating hotel she was hit by a storm, which caused the tow cables to break. Adrift, the ship ran aground on a beach on the island of Fuerteventura where, after 48 hours of storm, it broke into two sections, thus making it impossible to recover the wreck, and it was abandoned. Errico photographs here the moment of shipwreck.
The abandoned ship wants to metaphorically represent all the marginalized people, left behind to their fate from a modern society in which there is no longer room for those who are no longer economically useful.
