Prism II: Part of a current series addressing white privilege in the context of social change, utilizing the colonizing imagery of vintage children's books as source material, which takes on new meaning through a contemporary context. This imagery, along with Fat Albert comic books, is what I grew up with in regards to educational material, which formalized my understanding of the world at a young age. That figuration finds its way into recent work, reflecting my relocation to the Deep South in 2018.
This painting is engulfed with the "flesh" color of a vintage Band-aid, only a tint lighter. To match the hue and value of the bandage, I continued to layer the image with pastel lines, followed by more of the "flesh" color. The final circular gesture created the match with the bandage, and the vintage Band-aid was placed upon that spot.
