This primary-coloured sketch in oil pastels embodies the idea that we can better, more empathetically care for and connect with each other by understanding three “primary” elements in our lives - biological, psychological and social. This reflects the fact that people are much more than anatomic entities and that the psychological and social elements of their lives contribute critically to health and wellbeing. This image is paradoxical: the drawing itself is an anatomical depiction of a person’s face, head and neck, but through this initial image I am trying to encourage the viewer to look beyond the obvious physical form. This is an attempt to mirror what we may experience in our everyday lives. Our initial inclinations might be to focus on outward, physical aspects of the people around us, but to build meaningful connections requires us to consider the whole of someone’s life experiences.
