"October - a story with an unpredictable end" - part of
the cycle "One Year" 2021
"October" or
"Double Portrait" is a composition with a story. A story in addition to the visible
decomposition of the image into two separate spaces with two self-portraits,
recreating the complexity of emotions I experience during one of the complex months of the
year. I say complex
because this is a month that can be both sunny and warm, as well as cold and
rainy, it is this duality that can create different personalities. Nevertheless,
the colors are warm and for me personally they recreate a pleasant emotion. On the acrylic base of red and
dark brown, through a wide spatula with oil paint, I build a space in which
there are two portraits at the same time, but they are part of one common image
and are inseparable from each other. The two portraits are practically a
self-portrait.
If you look closely, you will see that the canvas at
the base of the left portrait is torn, so it happened that during its
transportation, not yet painted, it was injured. For a long time I moved it
from place to place and said to myself that it is not ok to paint on a torn
canvas, but one day in the studio I watched it, thinking about the cycle
"One year", so I made an analogy with the
moments in the year when things are not going as you wanted, whether it be due to bad
mood after a bad sleep, or something will happen that can
darken your mood - there are whole weeks that you want to tear from your experience. Thinking about it, I reckoned that
very often these are
the moments when you realize the need
for change and if you can,
you do it and turn the negative into a positive. So I
decided to paint on the torn canvas and I'm actually happy with what I've
achieved. Just as life often wounds us, and the wounds leave scars, so
does this painting have a scar that is an integral part of the vision, the
story and the provocation to try to achieve something good, starting with a
problem.
