Between Mountains and Rivers
Lin Baixue has always been fascinated by natural landscapes, and her works depict the mountains in her hometown of Zhangjiajie, Hunan, where the scenic Forest Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain shapes here are formed by the cutting and differential weathering of time and water. When she returned to China to visit her parents in 2019, she revisited Zhangjiajie. When she walked in the mountains, she could feel the power of nature, a kind of awe of life and infinite dimension.
The work reflects the relationship between rivers, mountains and natural landscapes in the peaks and ridges of quartz sandstone. The series is titled "Between Mountains and Rivers". The natural landscape depicts the rainy summer, and the mist is transpiring between the peaks and forests, as if entering a fairyland on earth.
The way of expression is abstract and subjective. Everything is simplified using raw and natural forms rather than directly depicting all the details of the natural world. Her work shows natural scenery, mountain water, mountains peaks, and rocky streams.
Monotypes belong to the monoprinting family and are single print works. They cannot be reproduced. Every piece of art is unique. This is a uniquely modern style compared to traditional printmaking techniques. It is first painted on an acrylic panel, meanwhile, the sides are rendered by placing the painted acrylic panels vertically, and the fresh colors are deliberately dropped before printing, exploiting the fluid nature of the ink and the oil to render the actual movement of the water and wet vegetation. Then the color is transferred to the final support (cotton paper) by pressing the acrylic sheet against it.
